2010 Veterans Championship

The Varsity Club Hornets  won the inaugural Vets Division Championship over the Club Paragon Aces on a rainy afternoon at Zirkel Field.  In a well pitched game from both teams, only 2 earned runs total, Steve Thompson got the better of Travis Rose for the victory.  Steve Thompson pitched 7 strong innings allowing  1 run, 0 earned runs, striking out 10 Aces and walking only 2.  Nick Kibler came in and pitched the final two innings for the save and allowing only one run.


The Club Paragon Aces drew first blood in the top of the first when Adam Borchardt reached base on a pass ball strikeout, stole second and scored on Andrew Mierzwinski's RBI single.   The Varsity Club Hornets responded in the second inning when Steve Thompson singled and later scored on Rob Williamson's RBI single to left field.  The Hornets took the lead in the third, when Pete Panagos took advantage of  an Aces error off the bat of Mike Beringer scored from second.  The score would stay at 2-1 till the seventh when Steve Thompson singled and later scored on a Tony Lopez Texas league single to left.  The Aces mustered one run in the ninth, Brent Weber led the inning off with a single off the leg of pitcher Nick Kibler.  Weber then stole second and later scored on a Ryan Johnson ground out to short.

This is the first championship for the Varsity Club Hornets, finishing the season 18-3 with a 215-72 run differential.  This season was truly a team effort from the Hornets as every player on the roster contributed to the season.
